Why should you visit Brittany?

Image
Chasing Mystery in Brittany : A Journey Through Time There’s a certain magic in Brittany that you can feel long before you see it. The air here carries whispers— ancient stories tucked into mossy stones, shadowy forests , and windswept coastlines . It’s a place where history isn’t locked away in museums—it lingers in the land itself, waiting for you to stumble across it. On my adventures we set out not for beaches or bustling markets, but for mystery. And Brittany delivers. Silent sentinels guarding ancient secrets Into the Woods of Legends Step into a Breton forest at dawn, and you half expect a druid or shaman to appear. The trees seem to guard secrets older than memory, and so many paths feel like they could lead to another world. Was that a trick of the light… or something else watching from between the trunks? The Stones That Speak Menhirs , dolmens , and megaliths scatter the countryside like breadcrumbs from another civilization. Archaeologists continue working to discover...

Feel the Mystery

Image
Brittany is famous all over the world for its multitude of ancient standing stones and burial chambers . Their true purpose has fascinated researchers and enthusiasts for hundreds, if not thousands of years. How and why were they built? Why were certain places selected for the building of monuments? How did these silent sentinels from the past relate to the land around them and the skies above them? On a Timetrails in Brittany tour you will visit some of the best examples of lesser-known monuments, discovering more about their origins and use. Together we will consider the rituals and ceremonies that may have been performed at each of them and we explore the practicalities of building such long-lasting features. You will find links to each of my tours from the menu on the left side of the screen (if viewing on a PC or laptop), or from the menu icon in the top left corner of a Smartphone screen. I you have any questions about my ...

Do you own an archaeo-dog?

Image
An archaeo-dog is a dog with an owner who is fanatical about prehistoric sites and archaeology and I am frequently asked if dogs are welcome on my tours.   We all know that dogs are part of the family so, if you are booking a private party, well-behaved archaeo-dogs are very welcome.    If you are making a standard booking (ie NOT private) please check first if you wish to bring your dog along as other guests may object (or there may already be an archaeo-dog on the tour).

Transport for your tour

Image
In response to a number of enquiries I would just like to confirm that for insurance and licensing purposes I am unable to provide transport for our tours at this time. For the time-being all our tours are undertaken on a guided self-drive basis so you will need to have access to your own vehicle. Should demand for a chauffeured service continue at the levels we are currently experiencing, however, I will investigate the possibility of offering transport in the not-too-distant future.

"Just a tour guide"?

Image
Why do I enjoy my tours so much? A little while ago somebody suggested I was "just a tour guide " and I actually found that quite depressing. Partly this was because the tone of the comment demeaned the work done by people all over the world who love sharing their local art , culture and history with others. More significantly, however, my sense of sadness came from the fact that the person who made the comment is someone I had never met and had never experienced one of my tours. He actually had no idea what I really do.   For me, my tours are about so much more than pointing at things and telling people about them. Each tour is a performance which depends completely on the relationships I build with my guests. Sometimes this includes building relationships between guests who may never have met. Doing this helps to build the sense of exploration, mystery and fun. This is where my teaching experience comes in.   Having begun my teaching career with the very smallest scho...

Welcome to Timetrails in Brittany

Image
Hello, I'm Philip .  Welcome to TimeTrails in Brittany . I've been running TimeTrails in Brittany tours since 2021 and, with each year that passes, the tours are becoming more and more popular with English-speaking visitors from all over the world. Increasing numbers of tours are also now being taken in French . I have had a passion for the archaeology of the Neolithic and Early Bronze Age since my childhood and I have finally been able to set up home in the heart of one of Europe's richest archaeological landscapes . TimeTrials in Brittany tours are about sharing just a few of these landscapes with you and helping you to look at them through the eyes of an archaeologist. Since starting time trails I've now increased the number of different tour itineraries to six and I'm always looking out for new and exciting tours to add.  To find out more about my tours, simply select each one from the navigation menu. You'll find it on the left hand side if you're ...
